What can i say? I like having bands all to myself. I facebooked a couple weeks ago that i had discovered a band that was very unpopular, but i didn’t mention the name because i didn’t want them to become popular. Granted, now that i think about it i forget the name of that band. Normally, the bands that i discover usually have an alternative edge but occassionally there might be a hint of screamo or electronic. If you’re a total music geek like i am then you might get a little giddy when this happens to you. On the other hand, some people don’t like discovering bands on their own. They may just play off of what’s popular at the moment. Currently on the top 10 song on iTunes resides Bad Romance by Lady GaGa, TiK ToK by Ke$ha, Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys, Meet Me Halfway by The Black Eyed Peas, Fireflies by Owl City (i’ll get into this one later), Replay by Iyaz, Whatcha Say by Jason Derulo, Who I Am by Nick Jonas & The Administration, Need You Know by Lady Antebellum, and 3 by Britney Spears. Notice that 8 out of 10 of those songs are pop. Empire State of Mind, which i don’t care for at all, is the only relative R&B song on that list. Occassionally, i fall into this trend of listening to what other people listen to as well. Replay by Iyaz is on my iPod and everytime i hear it on the radio i turn it up to hear my favorite part. It also seems to be everyone else’s favorite part. “… I could be your melody, oh girl i could write you a symphony. The one that could fill your fantasies, so come baby girl let’s sing with me…” The violin section during that part always makes me smile. Mom tried to get me to follow in her footsteps and play the violin as well. That didn’t go over so well. The “Na’s” right after that part is also my favorite part. Whatcha Say by Jason Derulo has clips of a song called Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap in it which is also a song i knew way back when. Still, it’s an alright song. Fireflies, on the other hand, is a more soft almost electronic song. I remember listening to this song in 7th grade when it was a free purchase on iTunes. I’ve known about Owl City for about 2 1/2 years and i knew that the lead singer Adam Young had amazing talent and an even more amazing voice. His videos are cute, melodic, and slow. It is definitely something differet to have on iTunes’ top 10 list because of the fact that it’s not rap or pop. Now i hear this song on local radio stations like Move It 99.7 and Wild 94.9 and i have to change the channel because i’m so disappointed. This morning, according to my friend, the music video played on MTV Music Videos and she had to turn off the TV saying she hated that all the good bands were becoming more and more popular. I remember at one point the album “With Roots Above Ground” by The Devil Wears Prada was the number one selling album on iTunes and i was shocked. The Devil Wears Prada is one of the more popular bands among me and my friends. Mike Hranica is the best screamer i’ve ever heard and lead vocalist Jeremy Depoyster (also lead guitar)makes an amazing duo along with Chris Ruby (guitar), Daniel Williams (drums), James Baney (keyboard, synthesizer, piano), and Andy Trick (bass guitar). At one point, their music video “Hey John, What’s Your Name Again?” was in the music section on Comcast On Demand. I found The Devil Wears Prada in 7th grade when i started to get into the screamo/rock scene. Now all my friends know of them which doesn’t bother me so much because we’re all into the same music anyway but, like Owl City, The Devil Wears Prada continues to stay consistent with their original kind of music and i think that’s why i’m so drawn to them. As i was coming out of 1st period PE this morning, my friend and i somehow got talking about The Saltwater Room, an older song by Owl City. It’s definitely been a while since i’ve heard the song but i vaguely remember the lyrics. We were talking about how it’s such a slow, romantic song when she told me that there was now a remix that not only sped up the beat, but changed a part of the lyrics. I haven’t heard the remix but from what my friend told me it sounds terrible. Some may view this blog selfish, and they’re probably right. But i don’t want all of my favorite bands completely mainstream and becoming popular and known by everyone. Would you?
